After one almighty year in the lives of The Killers, you’d forgive them for wanting to take a break.
A Worldwide tour, headlining Wembley and on the bill at many festivals throughout Europe; you’d guess they’d get a little bit tired and maybe want a rest.
But the band from fabulous Las Vegas seems adamant not to halt the buzz. Announcing ‘big news’ via their Twitter account the other day – and subsequently deleting the tweet – they tweeted a not-so-cryptic message last night which has sent Victims into meltdown:
It appears they aren’t going to take a break, nor take a year out for solo work, but release new material instead.
The words ‘Shot at the Night’ immediately struck a chord with the fan base, who remembered the snippet from their interview in NME in June:
So I press Ronnie’s iPhone to my ear and listen closely…Sonically, it’s somewhere between ‘Smile Like You Mean It’ and ‘Miss Atomic Bomb’, all knee-weakening synth chords and a drum break straight out of ‘In The Air Tonight.’
It doesn’t have a title, but it does have a yearning, almighty air-punch of a chorus: “Give me a shot at the night.”
Whether the Killers plan to premiere a new single on the 16th September remains to be seen; but all clues point in that direction.
Some have guessed they may do a small gig in London, just like the one they did ten years ago to showcase the new track.
It would be a typically ‘Killers’ thing to do, after all, and pretty special at that.
Whatever they do, it’s something I for one didn’t expect quite so soon, and so we wait with baited breath to see just what the band will reveal twelve days from now.
